Don’t look back. You’re not going that way.

I’ve been saying this quote to myself lately because I’ve been thinking about the past. I’ve been doing self-reflection while also inevitably remembering mistakes, regrets, choices, etc. Basically, things I wish I could change now. Do you ever just cringe remembering a specific moment in time?!

I think when people feel like they are evolving, it can be hard to look back at specific moments or periods, even if they aren’t even necessarily considered “bad.”

I feel like I’m in a stage of evolvement, which is such a weird thing to say about yourself!!! But, anyway, this can be hard because you feel like you just want people to see you in a certain way. Of course, you can’t control what people think or say (this will be a blog post very soon as well).

I think it bothers me so much because other people were there for some of those memories; they get to perceive you in a certain way and even have the power to share pictures/videos/tell stories from those times you don’t want to remember or don’t feel your best.

They probably don’t even know how you really feel about it now!

But, just keep chugging along, doing you, and remember the past got you here today!

We are our own biggest critics, so below are some tips on not getting stuck in the past and staying present.

  1. Actively remind yourself that you should only compare yourself to the person you were yesterday – nobody else.
  2. Mindfulness exercises, a huge part of practicing mindfulness, is about being in the present. Breathing exercises are great and affirmations. There is a quote that says, “If you are sad, you are in the past. If you are anxious, you are in the future. If you are at peace, you are in the present.”
  3. Limit time on social media. Social media is triggering for a lot of reasons in a lot of ways. Personally, anytime I feel extra on edge, I cut down on screen time.
  4. Forgive yourself, in whatever form that may look like for you.

If you feel similar, know that I am right there with you, just trying to figure it all out!

Cheers to moving forward, peace, happiness, and love! xo
